About National Bargello Museum

Housed in one of the oldest public buildings in Florence, the National Bargello Museum (Museo Nazionale del Bargello) was established in 1865 as the very first national museum of the newly united Italy. The imposing stone structure has lived many lives - originally built as a fortress and the headquarters for the Captain of the People, it later served as the residence of the city's police chief (the "Bargello") and even a notorious prison.

Today, its formidable walls safeguard the most comprehensive collection of Italian Renaissance sculpture in the world. Visitors can explore a vast array of masterpieces ranging from Michelangelo's early works to Donatello's legendary bronzes, all set alongside an extraordinary collection of medieval ivories, armor, ceramics, and tapestries.
