Palazzo Pitti & Boboli Gardens Location: How to Get There by Subway and Bus

Driving to Palazzo Pitti is tricky because the palace sits deep within Florence’s ZTL (Limited Traffic Zone). This area is monitored by cameras, and unauthorized entry results in a heavy automatic fine. Do not try to drive up to the front door. Instead, park outside the ZTL boundary. The closest options are secure garages like Garage Lungarno or Garage Fosi, which can sometimes register your license plate to permit temporary access—but you must arrange this with them in advance. For a stress-free experience, park at the Villa Costanza lot off the A1 highway and take the tram into the city.

If you want to save your legs for the museum stairs, the local bus system (Autolinee Toscane) is reliable and efficient. The most convenient lines are C3 and C4, both of which are small, electric buses designed to navigate the narrow city center streets. They drop you off right at the "Pitti" stop directly in front of the palace. Alternatively, Line 11 stops at Piazza San Felice, which is just around the corner. Remember to buy your ticket before boarding (at a "Tabacchi" shop or via the "AT bus" app) and validate it immediately to avoid a fine.

Florence’s main train station is Santa Maria Novella (SMN). From here, you have two solid choices. You can walk it in about 20 minutes (it's a mostly flat, scenic route through the city center), or you can grab a bus. Exit the station and look for the bus stops nearby; the C4 line is your best bet for a direct connection to the palace. There is no train station in the Oltrarno district itself, so SMN acts as your primary rail hub.

Florence is increasingly bike-friendly, though you should be prepared for some bumpy cobblestones. You can easily rent a bike or use a bike-share app (like RideMovi) to cruise over the bridges to the Oltrarno side. There are bicycle racks located near Piazza de' Pitti, but space fills up quickly in the summer. If you are nervous about riding in traffic, stick to the lungarni (the roads along the river), which are wider and offer better visibility than the narrow medieval alleys.

For most visitors, walking is not just the cheapest option—it is the most beautiful. Palazzo Pitti is located in the Oltrarno district, just a straight, 5-minute shot from the iconic Ponte Vecchio. Simply cross the bridge, passing the glittering jewelry shops, and head straight down Via de’ Guicciardini. You literally cannot miss the palace; its massive stone façade will rise up directly in front of you at the end of the street. It is about a 15–20 minute walk from the Duomo or Piazza della Signoria, giving you a perfect excuse to eat gelato along the way.
