Getting to the palace is easier than navigating a Medici family tree. Located in the lively Oltrarno district, the main entrance is at Piazza de' Pitti, just a straight, five-minute walk across the river from the Ponte Vecchio. Whether you are strolling through the historic center, hopping on the C3 or C4 bus to the "Pitti" stop, or arriving by taxi, all routes lead directly to the massive stone façade that dominates the square. For direct access to the Boboli Gardens, you can enter through the palace courtyard or use the alternative gates at Forte Belvedere or Porta Romana if you want to start your visit from the top of the hill.

Driving to Palazzo Pitti is tricky because the palace sits deep within Florence’s ZTL (Limited Traffic Zone). This area is monitored by cameras, and unauthorized entry results in a heavy automatic fine. Do not try to drive up to the front door. Instead, park outside the ZTL boundary. They drop you off right at the "Pitti" stop directly in front of the palace. Alternatively, Line 11 stops at Piazza San Felice, which is just around the corner. Remember to buy your ticket before boarding (at a "Tabacchi" shop or via the "AT bus" app) and validate it immediately to avoid a fine.

Florence’s main train station is Santa Maria Novella (SMN). From here, you have two solid choices. You can walk it in about 20 minutes (it's a mostly flat, scenic route through the city center), or you can grab a bus. Exit the station and look for the bus stops nearby; the C4 line is your best bet for a direct connection to the palace. There is no train station in the Oltrarno district itself, so SMN acts as your primary rail hub.

Florence is increasingly bike-friendly, though you should be prepared for some bumpy cobblestones. You can easily rent a bike or use a bike-share app (like RideMovi) to cruise over the bridges to the Oltrarno side. There are bicycle racks located near Piazza de' Pitti, but space fills up quickly in the summer. If you are nervous about riding in traffic, stick to the lungarni (the roads along the river), which are wider and offer better visibility than the narrow medieval alleys.
